What did that dream mean? Some dreams disappear within minutes; others stay with us all day. A useful dream interpretation looks beyond a single symbol and considers emotion, context and your own associations.

Why do we dream?

Dreams can occur during different sleep stages, while vivid narrative dreams are often associated with REM sleep. The U.S. National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke provides an overview of sleep stages and brain activity in its Understanding Sleep guide.

How to interpret a dream

Ask what emotion was strongest, who appeared, what happened before and after the main symbol, whether the dream repeats and what is currently happening in your relationships, work or home life.

Look at three layers

1. Events

Describe what happened without immediately turning it into a prediction.

2. Emotion

Notice fear, relief, grief, anger, joy or physical tension.

3. Waking-life connection

Look for parallels with current decisions, relationships or unresolved experiences.

Common dream symbols

A deceased person

This may connect with grief, memory, longing or the continuing emotional importance of that relationship.

An ex-partner

Dreaming of an ex does not automatically mean they will return. It may reflect unfinished emotion or a pattern that resembles something in your present life.

Teeth falling out

People often connect this dream with vulnerability, change, self-image or loss of control, but personal context matters more than a fixed dictionary definition.

Water

Calm water, storms and floods can carry very different emotional associations. Notice whether you were safe, overwhelmed or in control.

Falling

This may accompany feelings of uncertainty, loss of control or fear of failure.

Being chased

Ask what you were escaping and whether a similar pressure exists in waking life.

Keep a dream journal

Write down the dream immediately after waking, including people, places, colours, repeated symbols and especially emotions. Over time, your own recurring patterns become more useful than generic symbol lists.
